Charity of The Month May 2021: Emmaus Oxford

We are excited to announce that we are working with Emmaus Oxford throughout May 2021.

Nearly 100,000 households have been made homeless since the start of the pandemic, with tens of thousands more being threatened with the prospect of losing their home.

Calls from young people to homeless charities increased rapidly as lockdowns caused more family breakdowns which, accompanied by rising unemployment and mental health struggles, escalated homelessness levels and worsened the enormous struggle young people were already facing to access the emergency support they need.

Emmaus Oxford were forced into a 15-week closure, heavily impacting their valuable income during the course of this period. Emmaus Oxford operates through restoring confidence and self-respect to its residents (known as ‘companions’) whom take responsibility for keeping their community going and work hard to support themselves and others.

Emmaus is not about giving handouts; it’s about providing people with the tools to make positive changes for the future so they break the cycle of homelessness which has been proven to produce long-term, sustainable results.

Emmaus Oxford has the largest charity shop in Oxford filled with good quality, used and second-hand furniture, electrical items, household goods and clothing – all raising vital funds for Emmaus, as well as work experience, training, and a sense of purpose for the people Emmaus supports, building their confidence and self-esteem.

We value the great work of Emmaus in helping to empower people during some of the most difficult periods of their life, so they can rebuild themselves and rebuild their home. We have teamed up with Emmaus Oxford for May 2021 to help them as they reopen their doors again.

We are donating 10% of the service proceeds of our Will writing services to our JustGiving page – all you need to do is quote “CFF2021”, or simply mention the “Covid Fightback Fund”, when you ask us to write your Will with the legacy you wish to leave Emmaus.

You can get involved now by:

    1. Leaving personal property in your Will to Emmaus. Emmaus operates so well because so many generous people donate old or unused furniture and goods which help to create homes. You can leave your furniture in your Will to Emmaus, so you can help to house future generations and make a lasting impact on Oxford’s largest charity shop.
    2. Leaving a legacy of any value to further the great work of Emmaus and make a lasting impact on the futures in Oxford.
    3. Donating as much as you like to our JustGiving page (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/covid-fightback-fund) to help us reach our target and help Emmaus continue their great work and fightback from the impact of the coronavirus.

The lockdowns have emphasised the importance of family and home. Home is not a place; it’s a feeling. Let those without, know how you feel.
